Psychology as a discipline generally strives to achieve scientific objectivity. However, given the nature of the subject matter, subjectivity and political bias are often in evidence amongst theorists and those who apply their work in real-life situations. While the department takes an apolitical stance, the teacher often plays the role of 'devil's advocate' to raise students' awareness of bias and to assist them to be objective in their own work and the evaluation of others'.
